Centrul European de Excelenta pentru Mediu a fost infiintat in 1999, ca Departament Intermediu, fiind sustinut financiar de guvernul olandez (Programul Matra RO / 97/04). In 2001, ca urmare a unui concurs riguros organizat de Uniunea Europeana (programul PHARE RO 9706.01.02), Departamentul Inter-Mediu al Universitatii "Dunarea de Jos" din Galati a fost clasificat drept Centrul European de Excelenta pentru Mediu (ECEE), devenind astfel singurul centru romanesc clasificat ca atare de catre Uniunea Europeana. In afara de activitatile care se desfasoara in mod obisnuit intr-un departament universitar (educatie, cercetare, informare), ECEE vizeaza in principal: participarea la retelele nationale si internationale, impreuna cu alte institutii academice si non-academice, care se ocupa de aspecte legate de dezvoltarea durabila a mediului; participarea activa la proiecte de cercetare si dezvoltare finantate prin programe nationale si internationale se alatura partenerilor de administratie locala si nationala in organizarea de proiecte privind protectia mediului, dezvoltarea durabila si influenta factorilor de mediu asupra sanatatii populatiei; instruieste specialisti in diferite domenii legate de mediu; acordarea de consultanta si expertiza intr-o gama larga de probleme care sunt legate direct sau indirect de mediul inconjurator; organizarea de schimburi de studenti si cadre didactice sprijinite financiar de institutii internationale care acorda burse sau de catre partenerii ECEE in proiecte internationale care acorda fonduri din bugetele lor; organizarea de conferinte, seminarii si workshop-uri nationale si internationale privind aspecte legate direct sau indirect de monitorizarea mediului, calitatea si managementul acestuia. Pe langa faptul ca are personal propriu, ECEE colaboreaza cu toate facultatile si departamentele Universitatii intr-o gama larga de domenii, contribuind astfel la dezvoltarea retelelor multidisciplinare, valorificand in cea mai mare masura competentele personalului universitar si ale colaboratorilor.
