About Us

The European Centre of Excellence for the Environment was founded in 1999, as the Inter-Mediu Department, being financially supported by the Dutch government (The Matra Programme RO/97/04 ). In 2001, as a result of a rigorous contest organised by the European Union (the PHARE Programme RO 9706.01.02), the Inter-Mediu Department of the Dunarea de Jos University of Galati was classified as European Center of Excellence for the Environment (ECEE), thus becoming the only Romanian Center classified as such by the European Union.
Apart from the activities that are commonly carried on in a university department (education, research, information), ECEE mainly aims at:
• taking part in national and international networks together with other institutions concerned with environmental issues;
• joining local and national administration partners in organising projects concerning environmental protection, sustainable development and the influence of environmental factors on the population s health;
• training specialists in various fields pertaining to the environment;
• providing consulting and expertise in a wide range of problems which are directly or indirectly connected with the environment;
• organising students and teaching staff exchange, financially supported by international institutions granting scholarships or by ECEE partners in international projects granting funds from their budgets;
• organising national and international conferences, seminars, work-shops on aspects directly or indirectly connected with monitoring the environment, its quality and management.
Besides having its own staff, ECEE collaborates with all the faculties and departments of the University in a wide range of fields, thus contributing to the development of multidisciplinary networks making the most of the University staff and collaborators competencies.
